The Division for Climate and Environmental Physics (CEP) of the

Physics Institute, University of Bern invites applications for the position of

Ass. Prof. tenure track or Associate Professor in Climate and Environmental Physics in the field of Global Biogeochemical Modeling (100%)

(start date 01.02.2025)

The candidates will develop an internationally recognized research program in the study of past and future global biogeochemical cycles using and improving biogeochemical components in Earth System models. Potential topics include the feedbacks between climate and biogeochemical cycles (for example carbon and nitrogen cycles) in the ocean and/or on land, potential tipping points in global biogeochemical cycles and related fields.

Candidates have an outstanding track record of academic excellence in the field of modeling of global biogeochemical cycles and have a demonstrated record in acquiring third-party funding and scientific leadership. Future close collaboration is expected with the other groups at CEP working on climate modeling as well as ice core and atmospheric trace gas observations. Active collaboration with other research groups at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Research (OCCR) is also expected.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Physics or a related field. The candidates are committed to excellence in teaching and are expected to represent the field of Physics at the undergraduate level and the specific field of Climate and Environmental Physics at the graduate level. Courses at the undergraduate level are taught in German and sufficient proficiency is expected after the first two years of the appointment.
