Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as the Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Technologies.
About the position:
Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) is accountable for strategic planning, organizational leadership, research excellence and integrity, and communication for the Energy Technologies Area, one of six scientific Areas at Berkeley Lab. As a key member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership Team, the ALD works closely with the Laboratory Director and Deputy Laboratory Directors to plan and execute Berkeley Lab’s strategic priorities, initiatives and cross-Area research collaborations.
The ALD will lead the Area’s strategic direction to achieve its vision of sustainable, energy-efficient, resilient and increasingly productive cities and rural communities (see the 2021-2030 Strategic Plan, https://eta.lbl.gov/strategic-plan). They will interact with the Department of Energy and other external sponsors, promote partnerships with academia, other National Laboratories, and industry, and guide the development of externally sponsored research projects and programs consistent with the Laboratory’s overall vision and strategy. With overall responsibility for research and operational activities, the ALD will work with their Area staff to develop and execute priorities for facility operations and planning, champion a strong safety culture, and build diverse, interdisciplinary scientific, technical and professional teams.
About the Energy Technologies Area (ETA):
Begun by Art Rosenfeld in the 1970s to establish the field of energy efficiency research, and building on Charles Tobias’s legacy of electrochemical research, ETA translates fundamental scientific discoveries into energy technology innovation and deployment. With annual funding of over $160 million (FY2022), ETA’s research is conducted by approximately 450 staff and 250 affiliates in three Divisions: Building Technology & Urban Systems; Energy Storage & Distributed Resources; and Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts. The Area’s goals are to provide the research necessary to advance solutions to the climate crisis, enable the U.S. transition to more resilient coupled water–energy systems, build a solid and secure electrical grid, and develop clean-energy technologies that will ensure a more stable world for all.
Building on the strong foundation developed over the past 50 years, today ETA researchers have an unprecedented opportunity to bring to market energy-efficient innovations across the buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors. ETA’s scientists are at the forefront of: developing better batteries for electric vehicles; improving the country’s aging electrical grid and innovating distributed energy and storage solutions; developing grid-interactive low-carbon buildings; and providing the most comprehensive market and data analysis available worldwide, for renewable technologies like wind and solar.

• As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to setting the institution’s strategic priorities, initiatives and policies and supporting their implementation. • Guide the Area’s vision and evolve its strategic plan, leading strategies for new and continuing research funding, workforce development, scientific program goals, operational support, and scientific infrastructure needs to maintain world-class research output.
• Provide leadership for strategic talent management to motivate and assure a high-performing, diverse organization through effective recruitment, career development, performance management, retention, and succession planning, and proactively promoting stewardship principles of inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability, to cultivate the next generation researchers and leaders.
• Oversee Area management teams to ensure accountability for operational requirements and priorities, including health and safety, facilities, financial, and human resources. Act as chief spokesperson for the Area to UC, the applied program offices in the DOE, the State of California, other external agencies and internal groups. Develop and maintain strong professional connections with relevant senior DOE officials, in particular with the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
• Develop research and strategic collaborations with other Berkeley Lab scientific disciplines, fellow national laboratories, academic institutions, and private-sector entities, and an effective communication strategy to raise awareness about ETA’s research and accomplishments.
• Encourage entrepreneurship involving tech transfer and commercialization of technologies, working with the Lab’s Intellectual Property Office. (https://ipo.lbl.gov/)
• Advanced degree or equivalent experience in scientific discipline relevant to fundamental Energy Technologies research.
• Recognized record of leadership and research accomplishments in a relevant field.
• Successful track record as a visionary and collaborative leader, managing a large interdisciplinary operational, scientific or engineering research organization or program.
• Successful track record of establishing and articulating scientific vision, identifying research opportunities and building collaborative partnerships with facility users, universities, industrial partners and other research and development institutions both domestically and internationally
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including ability to establish relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and effectively navigate complex organizations.
• Demonstrated experience in effective people, project, and budget management and operational oversight, including with fiscal responsibilities, human resources, EH&S, and property and facilities management.
• Ability to model Berkeley Lab’s Stewardship Values: team science, innovation, trust, respect, and service, including building and maintaining a culture that is committed to the ideals of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.
• Substantial knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and government funding desired.
