Context and summary

The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only academic institution in Quebec dedicated exclusively to graduate–level research and training. Our professors and students carry out world-class research on a range of subjects. In partnership with communities and industry, we are proud to contribute to the development of society through our discoveries and the training of the next generation of scientists embracing scientific, social, and technological innovation.

The INRS – Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre is currently seeking to fill a new tenure-track position. The successful candidate will collaborate in the multidisciplinary research program of the Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory, located in Quebec City (Canada), by bringing recognized expertise in engineering or coastal sciences. The successful candidate will be called upon to act as co-scientific leader of the state-of-the-art research infrastructure, including the world-class large wave flume with assets of over $13M. The wave flume measures 120 m × 5 m × 5 m and can generate waves up to 1.8 m and currents of about 1 m/s. It is also equipped with a range of instruments to measure hydraulic parameters.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Develop, in line with the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre scientific priorities, a strong and innovative research program in the field of engineering or coastal science. Research topics may include the coastal processes, wave dynamics, coastal environments, coastal erosion, and climate change adaptation;
  • Fund research activities and laboratory equipment through external grants from public and private organizations or through industrial partnerships;
  • Participate in training activities, particularly within the framework of the Centre’s Masters and PhD programs and through the supervision of students and research staff;
  • Contribute to national and international recognition of INRS within its specialty fields.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in engineering or in another field related to oceanography or geosciences;
  • Strong scientific publishing record illustrating autonomy and originality;
  • Excellent potential to conduct research that will be original and productive, bringing a valuable contribution to the training of graduate students in the field of hydraulics within the next 5 to 10 years;
  • Aptitude for mentoring at the Masters, PhD, and postdoctoral level students and for supervising research staff;
  • Entrepreneurial skills and ability to self-fund research;
  • Interest in working both on fundamental and applied research projects in partnership with industry.

Working language

French is the working language of the Institute. Knowledge of English is required. Candidates who do not commonly use French are strongly encouraged to apply. The selected candidate will be invited to improve their knowledge of French during their first contract (3 years, renewable after evaluation), and all necessary resources to achieve this will be provided.
