Job Details
The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences (EACS) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (PA) at Bates College invite applications for a joint full-time (five courses) Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2023-24. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses. Field-based, computational, and analytical laboratory projects, and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.
The successful candidate will teach 4 classes (2 with labs) and contribute to the curricula of EACS and PA through climate modeling and within their field of expertise. Specific courses include an entry-level course on Earth’s Climate System and a 200-level course in Physics. College wide facilities include a staff-supported High Performance Computing Center, Visualization Lab, Digital Media Studio, and GIS and mobile GIS capabilities.
We strongly encourage applications from individuals in underrepresented groups, individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic disadvantages, and individuals with a demonstrated capacity to advance the college’s continuing commitments to equity and inclusion. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.
