Job Details

The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences (EACS) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (PA) at Bates College invite applications for a joint full-time (five courses) Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2023-24. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses. Field-based, computational, and analytical laboratory projects, and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.

The successful candidate will teach 4 classes (2 with labs) and contribute to the curricula of EACS and PA through climate modeling and within their field of expertise.  Specific courses include an entry-level course on Earth’s Climate System and a 200-level course in Physics. College wide facilities include a staff-supported High Performance Computing Center, Visualization Lab, Digital Media Studio, and GIS and mobile GIS capabilities.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals in underrepresented groups, individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic disadvantages, and individuals with a demonstrated capacity to advance the college’s continuing commitments to equity and inclusion. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.

Qualifications

ABD will be considered, Ph.D., preferred

Application Instructions

Review of applications will begin on April 17, 2023. Applicants should submit via Interfolio a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy/experience that also addresses equity and inclusion, and a research statement. Applicants should anticipate providing three letters of recommendation in the event that they are contacted for an interview. Interviews may be conducted via Zoom. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
