The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface” at the MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen, is offering (under the condition of job release)

2 postdoctoral fellowships (f/m/d) for 3 years, starting at September 1, 2023.
Salary group 13 TV-L (full-time)

MARUM provides an ideal environment for postdoctoral fellows to strengthen their expertise and develop their personal skills. It offers rich opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration across different disciplines in marine sciences. Postdoctoral fellows can make use of coaching and mentoring offers as well as a dedicated training program. MARUM has developed into an internationally recognized center for marine research.

The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface” is hosted by the Research Faculty MARUM. The Cluster quantifies exchange processes at the significant boundary layer Ocean Floor and their roles in the Earth system. The Cluster’s research portfolio consists of projects that (i) decipher the processes that control the transport of biogenic particles to the ocean floor under changing climate conditions, (ii) balance the transfer of carbon and other elements between the ocean floor and seawater, (iii) examine how ocean-floor ecosystems react to environmental changes, and conceive scenarios for a “warmer-than-present world” from ocean-floor climate archives with the help of climate models.

For more information about the Cluster of Excellence, visit https://www.marum.de/en/The-Ocean-Floor.html. To see information about the 2022 fellowship cohort, please see https://www.marum.de/en/The-Ocean-Floor/MARUM-Cluster-Fellowships.html.

The postdoctoral fellows are invited to develop their own research project aligned with the main themes of the Cluster. In line with the project’s direction and infrastructural requirements, the fellows will be associated with the research groups of matching principal investigators (see teams of Research Units and Enablers at the above website). We encourage fellowship applicants to suggest new ideas and/or new methodological approaches that could advance our existing research programme.

The selection of the fellows will be made in a two-step process. After an initial screening of the applications, shortlisted candidates will be brought in contact with a matching scientific member of the Cluster in order to exchange information that facilitates further development of their project proposal. The project will then be presented during an interview.

Your profile:

  • A completed doctoral degree in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering, obtained within the last five years.
  • A track record in marine or environmental research, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications in international journals, and/or an outstanding PhD thesis.
  • Research interests aligned with the major objectives of the Cluster.
  • Enjoy working in a diverse and interdisciplinary atmosphere and very good English language skills.
  • Interest in participating in seagoing expeditions and in collaborating with international partners of the Cluster.

The University of Bremen follows a diversity strategy. It strives to increase the number of women in research and strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified female candidates. The University of Bremen is certified as a family-friendly university that fosters family-friendly conditions for studying and conducting research, including part-time work. The University offers flexible working hours, childcare facilities, individual training opportunities, and participation in language courses.

The university is family-friendly, diverse and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.

Disabled applicants will be given priority if their professional and personal qualifications are essentially the same.

We look forward to receiving your application in English, including a CV, list of publications, a brief research proposal (2 pages max.), and names of potential referees until the 31.05.2023. Please send your application under the reference number A83/23 to the spokesperson of the Cluster
