The Research Professor/Principal Environmental Scientist is an established researcher with expertise in Coastal
Biogeochemistry and Nutrient Management who works closely with existing vibrant programs in coastal ecology and
biogeochemistry at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). Competitive applicants will have
demonstrated a commitment to leading a team of faculty, research associates, and post-doctoral scholars supporting the Coastal Systems Program (CSP) to advance its mission. The successful applicant will work to elevate the CSP to a
University Center.

The successful applicant will be expected to build on the existing strengths of the SMAST Coastal Systems Program,
work with research staff and scholars to maintain and adapt interdisciplinary research programs in the area of coastal
biogeochemistry and nutrient management and assist with evolving ongoing research to meet new needs. The
candidate’s areas of research interest should include problems of both local/regional and national/international importance with a focus on environmental issues relevant to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including but not limited to coastal biogeochemistry; aquatic ecology/biogeochemistry; monitoring, restoration, and protection of lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters, with emphasis on applied science; design and implementation of nitrogen management strategies; and development and testing of new biogeochemical tools for nutrient management. The Coastal Systems Program is also closely aligned with the newly established Biodegradability Laboratory, which provides opportunities for studying and developing sustainable alternatives to plastics.

The successful applicant will manage a complex budget, help develop and manage large-scale ecosystem assessments, and develop and manage complex contracts or grants with ecological scope.

Responsibilities are varied and include analyzing comprehensive and complex environmental issues, which require a high level of initiative in applying sound scientific methods and ecological principles to monitoring, restoration, and protection of lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters, design and implementation of nitrogen management strategies; and development and testing of new biogeochemical tools for nutrient management. The successful candidate will represent CSP in dealings with local, state, and federal governmental agencies, tribal partners, conservation groups, and private
landowners. The incumbent will also handle personnel issues appropriate of the supervisor classification, including
matters and actions pertaining to hiring, personnel actions, and training. The ideal applicant will also be expected to
supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students in areas such as coastal ecology, salt marsh ecosystems,
biogeochemical cycling in estuaries, and/or land impacts on coastal environments.

Applicants must be authorized for employment in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship is not available.
