The Department of Geosciences of the Faculty of Science at Tübingen University invites applications for the position of a Professor (W3) of Geology. The position is due to commence as soon as possible.

The University of Tübingen is one of 11 Universities in Germany designated as a University of Excellence. It is located in southwest Germany, is one of the oldest Universities in Germany, and hosts one of the largest geoscience departments in the country. The department is housed in the new (2020) building of the Geo and Environmental Research Center with state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities. The city of Tübingen is a mid-sized university town that is culturally and internationally diverse, and with an intellectually stimulating atmosphere. Nearby Stuttgart offers all amenities of a large city as well as an international airport. The region offers a high-quality and family-friendly standard of living with abundant recreational and cultural opportunities. More information on the department is available at: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/82353.

The successful candidate is expected to carry out independent research and teaching in general geology, including quantitative observations and geosystems modeling. The professorship represents core components of research and teaching within the department, and takes part in joint initiatives such as the strategic proposal „TERRA: Terrestrial Geo-Biosphere Interaction in a Changing World“. Thus, the research focus should lie on terrestrial earth system science with special emphasis on land-surface processes. An outstanding, internationally visible research profile is expected, the candidate should have a record of acquiring extended research funds. Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations and active involvement in collaborative projects within the department and with research groups in other departments at the university (particularly in the department of biology and the cluster of excellence in machine learning) is desired.

The professorship is responsible for teaching the mandatory courses ”Introductory Geosciences“ (BSc) and ”Physics of the Land-Surface“ (MSc) in the study programs of Geosciences (BSc & MSc), Geoecology (BSc & MSc), Environmental Sciences (BSc) and Applied and Environmental Geoscience (MSc), and actively participates in the geoscientific field education, particularly mapping courses. Participation in the academic self-administration of the university is expected.

Required qualifications include a PhD or equivalent degree as well as postdoctoral qualifications and teaching experience equivalent to the requirements of a full professorship.

The University of Tübingen is committed to equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion. Female scientists, in particular, are explicitly invited to apply, as are applicants from outside Germany.
