Job Details

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Remote Sensing. The successful candidate will design and implement research using InSAR and GNSS within recently funded NASA project to study the IndoBurma Subduction Zone (IBSZ). The project will use both Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 satellite data, along with GNSS, to determine horizontal and vertical deformation rates. The IBSZ is an entirely subaerial plate boundary with a large, actively deforming accretionary prism partially buried by the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta. Accurately assessing the long- and short-term dynamics of this vegetated region is critical for determining its earthquake hazard. Analysis and modeling of the results will be used to determine whether the subduction zone is locked, whether the anticlines of the foldbelt are actively deforming and whether strain is accumulating in the blind, buried portion of the foldbelt.

The position will be based at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus in Palisades, NY in the research group of Michael Steckler, while also collaborating with Eric Lindsey at the University of New Mexico, and the COMET group at the University of Leeds. The postdoc will also be part of a large, inclusive, and collaborative group working multiple tectonics and sedimentary processes in the region. There are also opportunities to collaborate with other groups at Lamont with an interest in InSAR.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have a PhD in Earth Science or a related field and experience processing and analyzing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar.
  • Experience with processing GNSS data and/or integrating InSAR and GNSS data a plus.

The appointment will be for 1 year, with an expected second-year continuation, contingent on progress and funding.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.

Columbia University benefits are offered with this Officer of Research appointment.

Starting Salary will be $66,000

The Lamont campus values diversity and inclusion, and encourages applications from members of underrepresented minority groups.

We accept online applications only.

Company

Our center has a unique standing at Columbia University.  We are one of only a few centers in the United States actively developing a global climate model to understand past and future climates both on Earth and on other planets.  To do so, we have a special relationship with NASA.  We are co-located with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in Columbia’s Armstrong Hall. Here, Columbia and NASA scientists work closely together to advance climate science and improve societal resilience to climate-related challenges both in the United States and around the world.  CCSR scientists and staff also work with many other partners – private sector, governmental, and non-governmental organizations – to answer these challenging scientific, social, and economic questions.
