Job Details
The Hydroclimate Research Group at Auburn University is looking for a fully funded Ph.D. student interested in improving understanding, observation, and prediction of hydroclimate processes (precipitation, evaporation, and soil moisture), extremes (drought, heatwave, and extreme precipitation), and impact risks using data science, machine learning, and physical modeling approaches. The student will have the opportunity to work on one or more of the following topics: 1) advance sub-seasonal hydroclimate forecasts by detecting new sources of predictability and developing data-driven approaches, 2) develop improved hydroclimate observations using multi-source data fusion and deep learning, and 3) understand uncertainty in projections of hydroclimate extremes and impact risks using climate model large ensembles. The expected start dates are Spring semester of 2024. More information about the lab: https://aub.ie/hydroclimate
Applicants must have a MS or BS in a science or engineering field at the time the PhD program begins. Deserving candidates should have a strong motivation to study climate/hydrologic issues using data science, machine learning, physical models, and multi-dimensional data, preferably have experience with one computing language (such as Python, R, or MATLAB), and possess or demonstrate a potential for excellent written and verbal communication skills.
If interested, please send an email to Dr. Di Tian (tiandi@auburn.edu) with the personal statement, CV, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for 3 references. Formal application will be made via Auburn University’s graduate school (www.auburn.edu/admissions/attention-applicants.php). The students can choose to pursue Earth System Science, Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science, or Biosystems Engineering Ph.D. Program.
