I am pleased to announce the first two vacancies in a the newly formed Remote Sensing Data Analysis Section at the California Air Resources Board (CARB):


This section will be responsible for collecting, managing, and analyzing methane plume detections obtained through remote sensing from satellites and aircraft.  Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas and mitigating these unintended leaks will be critical to solving our climate crisis.  The incumbents will help design and develop the technical infrastructure and software utilities needed to process incoming data in order to identify methane plumes, determine their source, and provide timely information to those who can fix them.

Candidates should have a strong scientific and technical background, a degree in relevant scientific or engineering disciplines, expertise in scientific programming, and a knowledge of air pollution and climate change science. Candidates should have experience using programming languages and data management tools such as Python, R, and relational databases.  The most competitive candidates will have experience with cloud computing services related to computation, storage, and workflow.  Experience managing and manipulating geospatial datasets using GIS frameworks, libraries, and relational databases with geospatial extensions is also highly desirable.  A working knowledge of how to develop and implement web-based tools and application programming interfaces (APIs) which can provide secure bidirectional interactions between CARB and its industry partners will also be critical to program success.

Candidates must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrate critical thinking, be able to independently prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and have the ability to effectively interact with scientific and non-scientific stakeholders. The candidate must also have the ability to develop visualizations, statistical summaries, and empirical models from existing datasets, and present technical information in a clear, concise, and logically organized manner. The candidate should work well in a team, convey a positive attitude, be self-motivated, and propose innovative solutions to problems and challenges.
