Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Director for the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) at the University of Maryland (UMD) located in College Park, Maryland. JGCRI, established in 2001 and located at the College Park campus of UMD, is a vibrant intellectual hub that develops, stewards, and applies capabilities developed by PNNL for the Department of Energy and many other sponsors to address key issues at the interface between human and Earth systems. The Institute includes over seventy scientists, engineers, post-graduate researchers, students, and support staff, plus a number of guest researchers, joint appointees, and interns dedicated to understanding and exploring responses to environmental change across a range of sectors and scales. 

This is an extraordinary opportunity to lead an interdisciplinary, world-class research team addressing important issues in both basic and applied research. The JGCRI Director is responsible for:

  • Managing and providing oversight for all division operations. Stewarding JGCRI’s key capabilities in integrated assessment modeling of energy, economy, water, agricultural, land, and climate systems at global to regional to national to subnational scales. Leading the strategic direction of JGCRI and serving as the chief spokesperson and advocate for JGCRI within and outside of PNNL. Identifying and develop new capabilities and projects that support PNNL mission and business strategies. Fostering and strengthening relationships with University of Maryland (UMD).  Interacting with stakeholders across PNNL, DOE, and UMD.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BA and 15 years relevant experience -OR- MS/MA or higher and 13 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong preference for PhD with 10+ years of experience working in integrated assessment, energy and climate policy, climate science, or related fields. Demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility in line and capability management. Experience in managing or overseeing large, complex, projects with a large number of diverse staff Familiarity with the Department of Energy’s environmental and earth systems science strategy and programs. Skilled in establishing and communicating a strategic vision, motivating and empowering staff from a range of disciplines, and communicating capabilities and impact to diverse audiences. Ability to create a safe, secure, and inclusive environment in which all staff can excel, and to promote high impact, team-oriented science. Good listening skills, experience with promoting effective information flow across an organization, and the ability to build effective relationships vertically and horizontally. Although JGCRI is primarily focused on computer-based research, some staff also conduct field research, and the successful candidate will be expected to have or gain experience in overseeing such activities, as they hold accountability for safe operations.
