The Environmental Measurements Facility (EMF) is a shared lab facility located in the Green Earth Sciences building [].  We are seeking an experienced Lab Manager to join our team. This position will work with existing lab staff and work directly with Stanford researchers. The lab is set up with a variety of instruments for the routine analysis of solids, solutions, and gases, and is open to the entire Stanford community.

Currently the lab has the following instrumentation: a Shimadzu TOC/TN, a Westco Discrete Analyzer, a Labconco Freeze Dryer, a Shimadzu GC, a Spectro Xepos HE XRF, an ECS Technologies EA, two Thermo ICP/MS units and one ICP/OES, two Dionex ICs, a Rigaku XRD, and a CEM Mars microwave digester. Additionally, we have two LiCor and one Aeris gas analysis systems, and a portable XRF. The lab manager has primary analytical responsibilities for the following instruments: Shimadzu TOC/TN, a Westco Discrete Analyzer, a Labconco Freeze Dryer, a Shimadzu GC, LiCor and Aeris gas analysis systems.

Your Responsibilities will include:  

    Develop technical and methodological solutions to complex engineering/scientific problems requiring independent analytical thinking and advanced knowledge. Provide technical direction and training to laboratory users in laboratory techniques and analytical approaches, including sample preparation and analysis. Optimize specific sample methodology and develop new techniques to support user needs. Laboratory users range from undergraduate students to faculty and senior research staff. Contribute technical expertise and perform basic research and development to support research programs in the laboratory, including sample selection strategies, calibration, sample preparation, data reduction and data quality control. Collaborate with laboratory staff on technique development and to ensure optimal operations. Design and develop new analytical methods to co-evolve capabilities with user needs. Develop, uphold, and document rigorous data quality requirements for lab users. Coordinate and organize daily operations, purchase consumables, lab and instrument cleaning and maintenance. Perform preventative maintenance along with advanced instrument troubleshooting. Maintain compliance with university, state and federal health and safety requirements, including the permit, handling, reporting and storage of materials. Ensure users complete all required EH&S training and follow laboratory safe practices. Collaborate with facilities staff, EH&S representatives and other facility lab managers as required. Perform administrative duties such as documenting maintenance, developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), invoice lab users, summarize user statistics, expenses, and revenue in an annual budget for each fiscal year. Work closely with directors and other lab managers of EMF.

To be successful in this position, you will need:

    Bachelors’ degree (such as Earth or Environmental Science, Analytical Chemistry, or a related discipline) and three years of relevant laboratory experience. Demonstrated project management experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences.
In addition, our preferred requirements include:

    M.S. or Ph.D. in Earth or Environmental Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field. Relevant experience working in academic research laboratories. Complete all required training courses to perform job related duties. Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations. Experience/knowledge in the following areas: Familiarity with nutrient, organic carbon, and nitrogen analyses. Experience with the preparation and calibration of solid, liquid and gas standards. Knowledge of chemical analysis environmental samples such as groundwater, soils, and plants.
Experience working with hazardous materials in a laboratory. Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment. Demonstrated experience managing users. Physical Requirements*:

    Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 50 pounds. Performing repetitive tasks such as climbing, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, chopping, and mixing or operation of hand and foot controls. Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to 8 hours. Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job. Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.


  • May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, Allergens/Biohazards/Chemicals /Asbestos, confined spaces, working at heights up to 10 feet, temperature extremes, heavy metals, unusual work hours or routine overtime and/or inclement weather.
