Department Summary:
The Department of Geological Sciences at Bridgewater State University invites qualified applicants for a tenure-track teaching position beginning Fall 2024. The department currently has five full-time tenured faculty members with expertise in a wide range of disciplines, including geochemistry, geophysics, structural geology and tectonics, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentary geology, and Earth history. Bridgewater State University is a teaching-intensive university located in Southeastern Massachusetts between Boston, MA and Providence, RI. The university is a liberal arts institution with a strong commitment to the sciences. Successful candidates will be faculty members who can work with their colleagues to help meet the mission of the department in serving and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse campus community.
Bridgewater State University was awarded a 5-year NSF Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) grant, which supports alliances among institutions of higher education to design and implement strategies that increase the number of historically underrepresented STEM faculty and promote systemic change. The grant provides a number of benefits to participating faculty, including course reduction and funding for establishing a research agenda, travel support, and cohort activities across the three institutions.

Essential Duties:
The tenure track position in the Department of Geological Sciences requires a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. In addition to teaching an upper-level course in their area of concentration, the candidate will be expected to teach introductory-level courses to support the university-wide core curriculum. The successful candidate will also be required to conduct research with undergraduate students to support the department’s vigorous and successful undergraduate research program. In addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate will be required to provide service to both the department and the university through various governance committees and to serve as the academic advisor to a diverse group of majors in the department.
Required Qualifications:
A PhD in the Geological Sciences by September 1, 2024.
Candidates must demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in engineering geology, including soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and related fields such as geomorphology and hydrogeology.
Industry or related experience a plus.
