Job Details

The Columbia Climate School (CCS) invites applications for a full-time, renewable, position of Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Center for International Earth Science Network (CIESIN).   Please visit our online application site at: apply.interfolio.com/131554 for further information about this position and to submit your application.

CIESIN, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, is a unit of the Columbia Climate School (CCS) that addresses Columbia University’s “Fourth Purpose”—the application of scientific data (especially spatial data), rigorous knowledge, and research for societal impact and the public good. With more than 40 scientific and technical staff based at Columbia’s Lamont campus in Palisades NY, CIESIN works at the intersection of the natural, social, health, and data sciences to advance research and applications focused on human-environment interactions and to provide unique geospatial science and technology capabilities for research, education, and decision making. CIESIN has a strong portfolio of contracts, grants, and other sponsored projects including the operation of the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC). Many CIESIN staff have adjunct appointments at Columbia and are active in local, national, and international organizations dealing with data sharing and stewardship, climate change, sustainable development, disaster management, and other topics. CIESIN has three main divisions: Science Applications, Geospatial Applications, and Information Technology.

Screening of the candidates will begin immediately, and the search will remain open for at least 30 days from the day of posting and continue until filled. For further information, please contact Gabby Cohen, Assistant Director for Faculty Affairs, at gcohen@climate.columbia.edu.

CCS brings together an interdisciplinary faculty to conduct research and practice in a broad range of climate-related fields and to train students at the master’s and undergraduate levels for careers in climate research, practice and education.

Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the CCS academic community.
