CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill at least two full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at any rank in the following areas:

(1) Water Resources Engineering and Science (WRES) to address critical local, regional, and global challenges that exist or are emerging in water resources management through innovative research and education, focusing on understanding how coupled water, energy, and air flows interact with biogeochemical processes across watersheds, rivers, ecosystems, and the built environment. This position is to expand expertise in the area of Environmental Fluid Mechanics. A successful candidate is expected to (1) address emerging problems relating to infrastructure for water systems, water quality and environmental integrity, and/or water-related natural hazards, in the context of societal adaptation to climate change, (2) advance our understanding of environmental fluid mechanics across scales, ranging from hyporheic zone to water surface-atmosphere interactions, to environmental boundary-layer flows (air-water interface, sediment-water interface) accounting for the challenges posed by a changing climate on infrastructure design, (3) contribute from theoretical, experimental, field, and/or numerical approaches to bridge the gap across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales covered by environmental flows in natural and urban systems, (4) collaborate within WRES (featured by hydrology, hydrogeology, hydraulics, sediment transport, and water resources systems in our traditional hydrosystems framework) and between WRES and other CEE areas (e.g., Transportation, Structures, and Environmental Engineering) to address the intensification of extreme events (e.g., floods, droughts) and their impact on infrastructure; increasing pollutant loads to water bodies caused by urbanization, land use changes and hydroclimatic alterations; and/or opportunities from emerging solutions to ensure resilience of coastal communities, including the Great Lakes, (5) develop interactions with faculty across the College and Campus, leveraging WRES’ strong collaborations with Atmospheric Science (ATMS), Earth Science and Environmental Change (ESEC), Geography and GIS (GGIS), Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE), and Natural Resources Environment and Science (NRES), (6) participate in related CEE and campus-wide communities, such as the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Prairie Research Institute, Illinois Center for Transportation, MAE Center (Creating a Multi-hazard Approach to Engineering), the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Safe Global Water Institute, as well as pursue and strengthen new and ongoing collaborations with the US Geological Survey (USGS), the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), the Illinois Water Resources Center (IWRC), the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC), the Engineering Research & Development Center (ERDC) of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), among others. Successful candidates for this position will have access to unique facilities and instrumentation at the Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory, the Ecohydraulics and Ecomorphodynamics Laboratory, the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, the Gary Parker Morphodynamics Laboratory, the RiverLab, and the Critical Zone Observatory.

(2) Environmental Engineering and Science (EE&S) to assist in the development of innovative solutions for the safe and reliable provision of drinking water and sanitation, and the management of different water matrices from source through distribution and reclamation to promote public health and/or sustainable infrastructure. The successful candidate is expected to (1) demonstrate an excellent track record of innovative research related to microbiomes. Specific methodologies could include innovative cultivation techniques, advanced analytical and omics tools, and engineering design. Candidates working on closely related areas at the intersection of public health and environmental engineering will also be considered, (2) present knowledge in fundamentals of environmental chemistry, microbial ecology, and sustainability, (3) participate in related CEE and campus-wide communities such as the School of Molecular & Cellular Biology, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, Prairie Research Institute, National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and School of Earth, Society and Environment, as well as many other Engineering Departments and the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Successful candidates are expected to (1) develop and maintain an internationally recognized vigorous research program, (2) demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, (3) provide service and leadership to the profession, performing research that can inform professional engineering practice and/or foster interactions with industry, and (4) demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors.
