Job Summary:
The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences at Furman University invites application for a tenure-track position in Sustainability Science at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level beginning in August 2024. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in sustainability or a related field prior to August 1, 2024, and must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and establishing a productive research program that leads to transformative educational experiences for undergraduate students.

Position Requirements:
We seek a Sustainability Scientist with a strong background in quantitative research methods and systems modeling broadly defined. We are particularly interested in the application of quantitative methods to sustainability metrics and the ability to train students, through classwork and undergraduate research. Areas of focus could include but are not limited to sustainability indicators, greenhouse gas accounting, ESG reporting, ecological footprinting, or material flow analysis, among others. Teaching responsibilities consist of four courses with labs per year, including SUS 120 (Principles of Sustainability) or EES 112 (Introduction to Environmental Science) and SUS 242 (Dynamic Systems Modeling), and upper-level electives in the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to employ inclusive teaching methods in the classroom, engage in undergraduate research mentorship, student advising, and service activities at the department, university, and professional levels.
About the Sustainability Science Program at Furman:
Our B.S. Sustainability Science degree program treats sustainability science as a unique discipline and grounds teaching and learning in inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives. We frame our programmatic outcomes around the key competencies framework in sustainability, scaffolding student learning towards applied, collaborative projects focused on solving sustainability problems. Most of our courses include lab periods that create space for project-based learning, with introductory courses capped at 24 students and upper-level courses typically serving between 12 and 18 students. Small class size, Furman's location at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its proximity to the award-winning downtown in the https://www.visitgreenvillesc.com/ provide ample opportunities for integrating field experiences into the curriculum.
