The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is seeking an Economic Geologist / Mineral Resources Computational Geologist to join our team in Albany, OR. This opportunity will allow side by side execution of research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to contribute to new areas of basic and applied research.
This position offers a hybrid schedule; 3 days a week onsite at the NETL campus in Albany, OR and 2 days a week from home office.
The successful candidate will participate in studies relating to research on the mapping, interpretation, and assessment of energy resources in geologic systems. The candidate shall have; foundation in general geology, Python expertise, experience in GIS and mapping (surface and subsurface), surface and subsurface data interpretation and visualization. Background in geologic resource assessments (e.g. carbon sequestration) and systems (e.g. water, oil, gas, mineral processing/mining). The employee will also have demonstrated research experience and publication record, including technical reports or peer-reviewed manuscripts outside of academia.
Primary Responsibilities
- Utilize geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data to develop testable hypotheses on the occurrence and distribution of energy and mineral resources in geologic systems.
- Apply computational geodata science methods to augment geospatial analysis.
- Apply statistical and geostatistical analysis for a variety of energy-related topics.
- Develop, query, manage, and maintain contextual and spatial databases, and structure/restructure existing databases for a range of experimental and spatial uses.
- Utilize Python (version 3+) to acquire, process, and analyze spatial and non-spatial multivariate data, as well as develop data analysis and visualization tools.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary group of science researchers to accomplish project tasks
- Build relationships with internal and external clients.
- Create and deliver oral, poster presentations of results in meetings and at technical conferences/workshops.
- Effectively document and communicate scientific results through peer-review journal manuscripts and technical reports.
Required Education, Experience & Other:
- Master’s degree in geology, applied computer science, machine learning, geospatial science, computational geology with 3+ years’ experience in energy related R&D.
- Proficiency in Python for advancing coding needs, including using Python to to automate analysis and build data visualization tools.
- Evidence of innovation in statistical methods applied to geospatial statistical analyses and other forms of multivariate analysis.
- Understanding of and experience in spatial and/or subsurface topics.
- Demonstrated experience with GIS (ArcGIS Pro/Enterprise, QGIS, other geospatial mapping and analysis software).
- Experience using ArcGIS Server and database software management systems.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Preferred Qualifications
- Background in geospatial statistics related to mineral assessment and/or carbon storage potential.
- Familiarity with subsurface data, including well logs and seismic, and interpretation software (Petra, Petrel, etc.).
- Experience in using core/geologic data visualization software such as WellCAD.
- Experience in data labeling approaches to refine and build on current classification capabilities and support automation of AI/ML and big data analysis.
- Evidence of substantive participation in the geospatial and/or subsurface geologic scientific community.
Salary Range for this position: $90K to $110K
