The Institute of Earth Sciences within the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University seeks to hire a faculty member as:

Professor of Isotope Geology (f/m/d)

W3 professorship in the German salary scale for scholars

at the earliest possible date.

Applicants  should have a strong background in the field of isotope geology and isotope geochemistry and have a broad range of internationally recognized scientific achievements. Strong analytically oriented research and its application is expected. A high-resolution ion probe is available as DFG-funded major instrumentation for isotope geological research. The ion probe laboratory is operated as a national facility available to the institute's research groups as well as to cooperative research in the field of isotope geology and cosmochemistry. Both, independent ion probe-based research and a significant contribution to the maintenance and continued cooperative operation of the Ion Probe Laboratory, are expected from the future position holder and their research group leaders.

The professorship is fully integrated into the bachelor's and master's degree programs in the Institute of Earth Sciences. Undergraduate lectures and exercises in the field of isotope geology as well as special courses at MSc level are to be offered. Field instruction should also be a central component of the teaching program. The position links research groups within the Institute of Earth Sciences and across the university to the Institute of Geography and the Institute of Environmental Physics, as well as other units including the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE), the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and the Center for Astronomy (ZAH). The candidate is expected to establish a primarily externally funded research program and to participate in academic self-governance.

Prerequisites for application are, in particular, a university degree, a high-quality doctoral degree, and (in accordance with Article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the State of Baden-Württemberg) a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or equivalent merits.

Applications including standard documents (curriculum vitae; copies of diplomas; lists of publications and external funding; teaching and research statements) should be submitted in English and are requested in electronic form (as a single PDF document) by October 31, 2023. Applications should be sent to the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Jörg Himmel, E-Mail: Dekanat-ChemGeo@uni-heidelberg.de
