The Department of Environmental and Geosciences at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2024. We seek a broadly trained scientist with the ability to contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs in Geographic Information Science and Technology. The preferred candidate should have experience incorporating geospatial and remote sensing software into courses, including in an online environment. In addition, the ability to teach programming language skills (e.g., Python, R) and applications is advantageous. Ideally, the candidate should be committed to undergraduate and graduate student success and be innovative in teaching introductory to advanced spatial analysis to students. The current teaching load is three courses per semester.
Candidates that can teach geospatial skills should complement existing department strengths in the fields of Environmental Science, Geography, Geology and Applied GIS. Potential areas of a candidate’s expertise include: climate change impacts, social vulnerability, environmental applications (including environmental justice), hazards and disasters, big data, critical minerals, geostatistical applications, or urban and regional planning. Candidates are expected to develop an externally funded research agenda that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration. The ability to involve undergraduates in research is highly valued.
The Department has ~200 undergraduate and graduate students and is part of Sam Houston State’s College of Science and Engineering Technology. SHSU is located in Huntsville in the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas approximately one hour north of the Houston metropolitan area. SHSU is classified as a Doctoral University: High Research Activity institution (R2) by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
Review of applications will begin December 1, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send a letter of interest, current vitae, contact information for three professional references, 3 letters of recommendation and statements of the following: 1) teaching philosophy, and 2) research interests. Candidates must have their Ph.D. by the start of the Fall 2024 semester. Please contact the search chair, Dr. Pat Harris, at jph020@shsu.edu with any questions.
