The Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University is seeking a motivated PhD student to join in the PhD program in Earth System Science.
Applicants are expected to conduct in-situ measurements and numerical modeling using FVCOM or SCHISM with HPC resources to understand hydrodynamics of Biscayne Bay and its adjacent waters along Florida coast, to investigate interaction between surface and subsurface water for coastal cities including Miami, and to provide scientific solutions to resolve water quality issues for coastal critic zones. They are expected to work with various groups to help coastal communities and decision makers understand where coastal protection can help to reduce risk, enabling the public to view flooding map in the past, present, and in the future due to surge from storms, hurricanes and inland flooding.

Requirements:
-Experience in computer programming (numerical modeling skill is desirable, matlab, python, fortran, HPC experience is an add-on)
-Knowledge of GIS tools
-a master's degree in oceanography, meteorology, fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline
-strong mathematics and physics background
-experience in processing observational datasets in different format like netcdf, ascii, grb2, etc.
-fluent in English and proficient in scientific writing
-strong motivation for academic research
-International students may need to meet the English language tests requirement
