A sample of assistantship positions available in Fall 2024:

- Nutrient and Resources Modeling - Modeling of nutrient flows and downstream water quality impacts

- Ecological Impact of Oyster Restoration - Evaluating the ecological response of a large-scale oyster restoration project

- Estimating Greenhouse Gas Emissions Using Satellite Observations - Applying machine learning, statistical analysis, supercomputer simulations, satellite data, and atmospheric simulations to estimate the sources and evolution of carbon dioxide and methane

- Pest Spread Modeling - Using the Pest or Pathogen Spread (PoPS) model (popsmodel.org) to document dispersal patterns of corn earworm

- Geospatial Analysis of Tidal Flooding and Water Quality Impacts - Investigating water quality hazards driven by sea level rise

- Geospatial computation and AI - Developing novel and scalable AI, computer vision and deep learning techniques for monitoring and mapping natural resources using multi-sensor global earth observations

The Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State is an internationally recognized hub for interdisciplinary data scientists pushing the boundaries of spatial data science to advance discovery and inform real-world decision-making. Our work involves deep collaboration with government, industry, and community partners to address environmental and societal challenges.

We welcome applicants with quantitative and computational backgrounds interested in pushing the boundaries of geospatial analytics and technology from a variety of perspectives, including social and behavioral sciences, natural resources and the environment, computer science, engineering, design, and more. We are especially committed to increasing the representation of students that have been historically underrepresented in U.S. higher education.

There are also opportunities for students to receive a stipend above the base rate of $30,000. These do not require an additional application:

- Goodnight Doctoral Fellowship - One to two incoming students with a track record of exceptional achievement in the sciences will earn an additional $10,000 per year + all all student fees waived

- University Graduate Fellowship - Five incoming students will receive an additional $4,000 in their first year

- Diversity Enhancement Fellowship - Two incoming students will receive an additional $2,000 in their first year

- Mansour Doctoral Fellowship - One incoming international student will be nominated to receive an additional $10,000 in their first year

Interested students are encouraged to contact Rachel Kasten, Graduate Services Coordinator (rachelkasten@ncsu.edu), with any questions.
