The department of Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences (EEGS) at Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2024.
We seek a scholar with strong expertise in geospatial methods and data science (preferably artificial intelligence, spatial modeling, spatio-temporal and big data analytics, geovisualization, and geostatistics) with applied research focus in environmental, earth sciences, and/or geography.
The successful candidate is expected to establish a robust research program in one or more of these areas: natural hazards, spatial vulnerability assessments, socio-ecological systems analysis, human dimensions of environmental change (including health), climate change, climate change justice and equity, urban systems, remote sensing, and environmental or climate modeling. Additional duties include developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental, earth, and/or geospatial sciences, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and providing service to the department, the college, the university, and the profession.
Interested candidates can advise and teach doctoral students through a joint appointment at the CUNY Graduate Center as affiliated doctoral faculty.
About the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geospatial Sciences (EEGS)
The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences offers the following programs: Bachelor’s degrees in Geography and in Earth Science; interdisciplinary B.S. in Environmental Science; Master’s of Science in Geographic Information Science (GISc), which is recognized as a Professional Science Master’s (PSM); Certificate in GISc at the undergraduate and graduate levels; Certificate in Earth Science Education, and an Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s Program in GISc. The department also participates in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Ph.D. program at the CUNY Graduate Center, offering specializations in Geography, Environmental and Geological Sciences, as well as Environmental Psychology. We also offer a vibrant internship program for both undergraduates and graduate students.
Most faculty have held positions in various governmental agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and private sector consulting firms. NOAA-CESSRST (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies) affiliated faculty and students are involved in research projects pertaining to the NOAA sciences and are active in publishing and presenting their work. EEGS faculty are also affiliated with the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research, and the CUNY Institute for Health Equity, and there are opportunities for faculty at CUNY to become affiliated with research centers relevant to their work. Additionally, EEGS faculty maintain a strong collaboration with CIESIN (Center for International Earth Science Information Network) at Columbia University. CIESIN supports students with research internships and the presentation and publication of the results in collaboration with EGGS faculty and Columbia University scientists. EEGS faculty also lead the NASA funded project Surface-based Precipitation Measurement Network in the Bronx: Science and Education Opportunities for Diverse and Minority Students using a precipitation gauge installed on campus.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. inEarth or Environmental sciences, Geography,or affiliated discipline. ABDs will be considered if their degree is conferred prior to the start of employment.

Experiencein teachingundergraduate and/or graduatecourses.

Strong expertise in Python programming for spatial analysis and GIS software.

Ability to work collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed scholarship.

Experience in undergraduate and graduate student supervision.

R programming expertise.

Field work research experience.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $86,645 - $99,532
