The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) at Northwestern University (NU) invites applications for a post-doctoral research scholar. We seek an outstanding candidate to develop and implement a reactive transport model that characterizes and predicts basalt dissolution in agronomic settings, with the aim of advancing decarbonization by enhanced rock weathering (ERW). Candidates should have a background in numerical modeling, mathematics, statistics, and data visualization, with additional expertise in solute geochemistry, carbonate equilibria, and kinetics. Individuals with further knowledge of pedology, hydrology, plant and soil biogeochemistry, and/or other disciplines relevant to ERW will be particularly competitive for the position. Funding for the two-year position is provided by the Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy at NU. The successful applicant will work closely with faculty and graduate students in EPS and the Plant Conservation and Biology Program, jointly affiliated with NU and the Chicago Botanic Garden, to synthesize results from mesocosm experiments and field trials. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and list of three references to this application portal.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled, with an anticipated start-date of June 1, 2024.
