M.S. Graduate Research Assistantship: Evaluating Phosphorus Storage in Streambank Sediments

Project Description:

Streambank sediments can be an important source of phosphorus to Wisconsin waterways, driving eutrophication and negatively impacting aquatic health, human health, and local economies. There is limited understanding of how groundwater–surface water exchange in the hyporheic zone impacts streambank sediment phosphorus storage, and this study aims to quantify these processes. Students will characterize sediments, phosphorus associations, and subsurface hydrology at two sites in central Wisconsin. Project duties include (1) leading field campaigns to seasonally sample sediments and streambank porewater, (2) running analytical equipment to collect water quality data, and (3) conducting batch experiments on sediment samples to evaluate the biogeochemical conditions that promote storage and release of phosphorus. Project findings are anticipated to inform land, nutrient, and water management decisions.

Position Description:

• Two years of 9-month Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) position funding $12,930 for a 9-month position at 20 hrs/week Additional summer hourly salary available at $16.58/hour
• Tuition and fees included for two years in the Environmental Science and Policy Graduate Program with thesis expected
• Opportunities to work on components of the project with collaborators in the UW-Madison Geoscience Department and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey
