TITLE: Open Rank Tenure-track or Tenured Faculty Position, Severe Weather–Atmospheric and Earth Science Department

ABOUT THE POSITION: The Atmospheric and Earth Science (AES) Department at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured open rank (i.e., assistant professor, associate professor, or professor) faculty position in Severe Weather. We seek a faculty member specializing in one or more of the following areas: severe storms, high-impact weather, ground-based atmospheric remote sensing, radar meteorology, mesoscale meteorology, boundary layer dynamics, convection, cloud/precipitation processes and other related areas, with particular emphasis on observational methods, field campaigns, and a focus on the active use and further development of the Severe Weather Institute–Radar & Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL) and associated research & teaching facilities. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or related area and will join the department in a position commensurate with experience. The successful applicant at the assistant professor level is expected to establish and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized research program, evolve activities within SWIRLL, teach graduate and undergraduate courses in AES, and engage graduate and undergraduate students in externally funded research.  A successful applicant at the associate professor or professor rank has similar expectations in teaching and research, and they should already have a well-established research program.  The successful applicant at the professor rank should also demonstrate authoritative knowledge and reputation in one or more of the areas highlighted above.  The applicant will have opportunities to build active collaborations within the department and with scientists within the Earth System Science Center (ESSC), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), the Redstone Arsenal, and elsewhere. The AES Department also expects to open several additional faculty positions over the next five years.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The AES Department is co-located with the UAH ESSC, NASA MSFC Earth Science Division, and the National Weather Service, enabling undergraduate and graduate students to receive a unique collaborative research and education experience. There is a broad and diverse suite of research topics, including atmospheric instrumentation, land use/land cover change, severe weather, climate, lightning, numerical modeling and data assimilation, satellite and ground-based remote sensing, air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, urban studies, natural disasters, and environmental policy and decision-making. The department has a B.S. and M.S. program in AES with concentrations in Earth System Science (ESS) and Atmospheric Science (ATS) and an ATS Ph.D. program. The AES Department has 16 full-time faculty, over 20 affiliate faculty, and over 40 graduate and 100 undergraduate students. The SWIRLL building is a world-class education and research facility, hosting multiple research and instrumentation laboratories; faculty, staff, and student offices; a field campaign operations center and other meeting spaces; and a large high bay that serves as home for the Mobile Atmospheric Profiling Network (MAPNet). MAPNet, an NSF Facility for Education and Research (FARE) facility, contains a suite of ground-based mobile atmospheric profiling instruments, including 915 MHz wind profilers, an X-band profiling radar, a mobile scanning X-band polarimetric radar, a Doppler LiDAR, and other in situ and remote sensing instruments. UAH also owns and operates a C-band polarimetric radar at the Huntsville International Airport. The department also collaborates closely with the ESSC, which employs over 90 researchers engaged in a wide variety of AES topics. Further, the department works with multiple NASA Applied Earth Science Programs, performing research that engages students and employs dozens of university scientists.
