Description

The University of Delaware (Newark, DE) invites applications for an instruction-focused faculty position in the Department of Earth Sciences. The Department offers MS and PhD degrees in Geological Sciences, bachelor’s degrees in Earth Sciences and Earth Science Education, minors in Earth Sciences and Coastal and Marine Geoscience, and introductory laboratory-based general education courses. This 9-month Continuing-Track position (untenured) will be filled at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of August 2024. Continuing-Track faculty enjoy full faculty benefits and are eligible for continuing multi-year contract renewals, promotion in academic rank (to associate professor and professor), and sabbaticals. Continuing-Track faculty also participate in the shared governance of the University and may hold academic leadership positions. Duties

The successful candidate will teach lecture, laboratory, and/or field-based courses as assigned by the Department Chair (typically 2-3 undergraduate courses in the Fall and Spring semesters) and may elect to teach over Winter and Summer sessions on a supplemental contract. They will develop new educational materials and incorporate evidence-based teaching methods into their courses; create and foster an inclusive learning environment in classroom, lab, and field settings; engage and support students from a wide range of cultural and academic backgrounds; mentor graduate student teaching assistants; and contribute to departmental and institutional service and outreach activities. Scholarly activities may also be pursued but are not required for satisfactory performance or advancement on the Continuing Track.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a PhD degree in Earth Science or a closely related field before the position start date. Prior teaching experience is also required by the time of application and should be well documented in application materials; experience as a teaching assistant may be applied to this requirement. Applicants should also address their experience with course development, the use of evidence-based teaching approaches, use of educational technology, recruitment and mentorship of undergraduate students, and strategies to interact with diverse groups of learners.
