National Science Foundation Program Director for Geophysics

The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) is seeking qualified candidates for a Program Director in the Geophysics program. The responsibilities of the NSF PD include the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, identifying emerging trends and long-range planning for the program, communicating advances in the research supported both internal to NSF and to the public, and coordination and partnership with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations.

The Geophysics program seeks a candidate with expertise in any aspect of solid earth physics, such as geodesy, geodynamics, geomagnetism, mineral physics, potential fields, seismology or rock deformation. This opportunity is available through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA). IPA Rotators, come to NSF on temporary (1-4 year) assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff. The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US. Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional research and mentoring. IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual.
