The Department of Environmental and Sustainable Engineering (ESE) at the University at Albany (UAlbany), State University of New York invites applications for international summer research internships sponsored by the National Science Foundation International Research Experiences for Students (NSF-IRES) program.
The overall goal of the IRES summer program (10-week) is to encourage U.S. undergraduate and graduate students, primarily from underrepresented minorities, women and first-generation/low-income students in conducting research on emerging air quality issues in the megacity of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Each year a cohort of 8 diverse students participate in pre-departure virtual training (two weeks), visit Bangladesh for seven weeks and one week (in-person) post-trip follow-up in the U.S. In each cohort, each student will work on an individual project to address one unifying research theme – harnessing low-cost techniques to improve air quality.
Specific objectives are to:
- broaden the international research experience and global awareness of the U.S. students,
- increase students’ skills and knowledge on air pollution issues and potential solutions,
- enhance their competencies in intercultural communication, self-confidence, and leadership,
- develop environmental literacy and interest among underrepresented students in choosing career in STEM fields, and
- strengthen and leverage collaborations with international institutions.
Financial Support
- Stipend: $3,500 for undergraduates ($500/week) and $4,200 for graduate students ($600/week)
- Travel: support for international and local travels
- Subsistence: housing and meals provided
