Assistant Instructional Professor - Department of the Geophysical Sciences
Description
The Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for teaching positions at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor. Appointments at this rank are for a term of up to three years with the possibility of renewal. This is a career-track position with potential progression and competitive salary and benefits. Expected start date is September 1, 2024.
Position responsibilities include teaching up to six courses per year, contributions to the effective functioning of departmental programs of instruction, and ongoing professional development.
The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
Completion of a Ph.D. degree in Earth or Environmental Sciences or a closely related field is required prior to the start of appointment.
Preferred qualifications:
Qualifications to teach courses in one or more of the following areas, which are example general education courses offered by the Department:
· Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast
· Earth as a Planet: Exploring Our Place in the Universe
· Origin and Evolution of the Solar System and the Earth
· Natural Hazards
· Environmental History of the Earth

· A cover letter;
· A curriculum vitae, including a history of courses taught;
· Syllabi of courses previously taught and/or designed, or sample syllabi of proposed courses;
· A teaching statement;
· Three letters of recommendation, at least two of which must address teaching ability;
· Additional evidence of pedagogical accomplishment and promise, such as but not limited to, teaching portfolio, recent course evals, third-party observations of the applicant's teaching, or other relevant assessments, etc.
