Position description

The University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a senior faculty position in any domain related to space science, with the possibility of appointment to the Directorship of the Space Sciences Laboratory. The faculty affiliation may be with any of three academic departments (Astronomy, Physics, Earth and Planetary Science).

Berkeley has a long history of excellence in teaching, research, and service, as well as a culture that values and promotes interdisciplinarity. It has a compelling record of national and global engagement, and benefits from strong relationships with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, along with other research laboratories and industry. Berkeley has also recently launched the new Berkeley Space Center. SSL is poised to serve as a key partner as it is developed. Together with its partners, Berkeley is actively expanding an integrative initiative in space science and technology.

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) has been a center of excellence for the development of innovative instrumentation for space sciences missions ever since 1959. The Laboratory has played a leading role in over 50 NASA missions, including the Apollo, Mars, and Explorer programs, as well as many international programs. Scientists at the Laboratory have been responsible for major discoveries in astrophysics, space and heliospheric physics, planetary science, and remote sensing of the Earth. The SSL Director will serve as the chief executive officer of UC Berkeley's largest research unit, leading all aspects of strategy and program development, management, and operations, and engaging the wealth of intellectual power of UC Berkeley faculty, researchers and students. The SSL Director is appointed by and reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated history of leadership of relevant research programs, including management of scientific and technical personnel. A more detailed description of the duties and expectations of the SSL Director can be found here.

SSL staff provide unique engineering and technical capability in instrument development, flight software, project management, payload integration and test, and satellite operations. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to bring or develop new programs that can harness this expertise. We are searching for a new faculty member who is committed to research and teaching in a university setting. All three of the candidate academic departments are highly ranked in their respective fields.

The Departments of Astronomy, Physics, and Earth and Planetary Science are committed to excellence, including through a culture that nurtures scientific identity and removes barriers to entry, in order to strengthen pathways into careers. Please visit each department's Diversity & Inclusion websites for more information.

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit the New Senate Faculty page.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. Consistent with this commitment, UC Berkeley requires all applicants for Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload an Authorization of Information Release form into AP Recruit as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, applicants will only be subject to reference checks if and when they are selected as the candidate to whom the hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer.
