TITLE:                       Visiting Assistant Professor of Environment and Sustainability

DEPARTMENT CHAIR:    Dr. Nathan Rowley

STATUS:                    Full-time, benefit eligible

Position description

The Department of Environment and Sustainability (DoES) at Ohio Wesleyan University is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of earth science for the 2024-2025 academic year. DoES is a growing, interdivisional program with majors in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography at a nationally-ranked private undergraduate liberal arts institution. We seek a broadly trained individual with an earth sciences background and teaching and research abilities in environmental water, hydrology, and/or soils and earth surface processes, emphasizing connecting scientific research and environmental management in practice and related social issues. Interdisciplinarity, flexibility, and creativity in teaching, research, and service are essential. Candidates should address how they will integrate OWU’s signature program, the OWU Connection, in their research and teaching. The OWU Connection emphasizes experiential learning such as funded, student theory-into-practice research, internships, creative projects, service learning, and travel learning. Candidates should explain how they will help build a diverse and inclusive campus community as part of their teaching and research. We strongly encourage candidates who can address social and environmental justice as part of their teaching and research to apply. Finally, candidates should describe their ideas for innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to higher education's challenges in the coming decades.

Position responsibilities, beginning Fall of 2024, include three courses per semester, including a foundational course (e.g., hydrology, water science, soils, etc.) and contributing to sections of our broad introductory earth science course, a new environmental laboratory course, upper-level environmental course or additional courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Faculty at OWU are given significant autonomy in the development of their courses. Resources are provided for course technology, fieldwork, and professional funds for travel and research. Faculty are evaluated based on teaching, scholarship, and service.

  • The successful candidate must have a Ph.D., or be on track to complete their Ph.D., by August 2024, in an earth science-related field, including earth science, geography, geoscience, hydrology.
  • Proven record of successful teaching experience and an active research agenda.

Completed application packets will include:

  1. Cover letter
  2. Teaching statement
  3. Diversity statement
  4. Curriculum Vita

We will request three letters of recommendation and transcripts upon an initial review of submitted letters of interest.

We will begin review of application materials on 01 April 2024.
