The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Virginia Tech is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in hydrology, water quality, machine learning, and eXplainable AI. The researcher will be based at the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory (OWML) and will work directly with Dr. Admin Husic on a recent NSF CAREER project that integrates game theory concepts to explain water quality variations across time and space, from local to global scales. The project will leverage large-sample datasets and high-performance computing to advance transferable insights into what controls variable patterns of riverine biogeochemistry.
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology or water resources science, or environmental science and related fields. The researcher is expected to possess a skillset in hydrologic modeling, machine learning, and technical writing. Preferred, but not required, skills include experience with high-frequency aquatic sensing data and explainable artificial intelligence methods. Depending on the career goals of the applicant, opportunities exist for mentoring graduate students and developing grantsmanship skills. The appointment is for two years subject to satisfactory performance.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, a CV that includes a complete list of publications, and the names of three references in a SINGLE PDF to husic@vt.edu. Consideration of applications will occur as they arrive and will extend until June 1st. The intended start date is August 10th, but there can be flexibility for the right candidate.
The Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory is located in Northern Virginia (NoVA) in the City of Manassas, less than an hour from downtown Washington DC and numerous parks and museums. NoVA is the most populous region of Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area, with several nearby airports, a large job base, and includes numerous public transportation options.
