The Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI), a prestigious part of the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), a leading institution in the realm of Earth and Planetary sciences, is inviting applications for a full-time tenured faculty position at the esteemed rank of Full Professor. We are dedicated to attracting and retaining exceptional, diverse faculty members who possess a passion for integrating observations and methodologies from geology, geochemistry, and/or geophysics to tackle profound research questions within the Earth and Planetary sciences.

Our Focus: We are particularly keen on enhancing our current expertise in utilizing observations and quantitative analyses to propel advancements in marine geophysics, paleoceanography, geohazards, or marine geology. Candidates whose research aligns with these areas will have the exciting opportunity to leverage our world-class laboratory facilities and capitalize on AORI’s strengths in marine and maritime studies, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be entrusted with developing and sustaining a robust, externally funded research program. They will also play a pivotal role in teaching postgraduate geosciences courses at UTokyo, emphasizing cultivating inclusive teaching practices. Furthermore, they will be instrumental in mentoring a diverse cohort of postgraduate students and contributing their expertise to various service roles within the Department, University, and broader discipline.

Required Qualifications: Essential qualifications for this position include:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in Earth and Planetary Sciences or a related field at the time of application
  • Demonstrated excellence and innovation in research and scholarship
  • A solid commitment to teaching, mentoring, and research training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Dedication to fostering an equitable and diverse academic environment
