The Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor in Remote Sensing. Best consideration date: Oct. 1.

This position will have its tenure home in the Department of Geographical Sciences and is expected to start in July 2025. The position will be a member of our Center for Remote Sensing Excellence which is part of our International Center for Innovation in Geospatial Analytics and Earth Observation (International GEO Center), which supports the development and application of remote sensing and geospatial information science through computation, data science, and technology to advance knowledge of the Earth system. We innovate in cutting-edge techniques designed to monitor and model Earth’s environment through global collaboration and excellence in both research and teaching. Position Overview:

The Department of Geographical Sciences is a world leader in remote sensing, with a large number of tenured and tenure-track faculty, professional track faculty, and graduate students. We are interested in expanding our remote sensing expertise through the incorporation of additional techniques in our research portfolio. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to:

  • Microwave remote sensing including synthetic aperture radar;
  • Hyperspectral imaging;
  • Thermal remote sensing;
  • Radiative transfer;
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning in Earth Observation;
  • The use of remote sensing for urban, coastal, or hydrological applications.

Responsibilities:

We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will expand the breadth and depth of our research and teaching while enhancing the national and international reputation of our Department. The candidate will be expected to

  • Develop and maintain a robust, externally funded research program
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in remote sensing
  • Support, mentor and supervise graduate students
  • Engage in interdisciplinary research and collaboration across the department (human dimensions, GIS, physical geography) and campus that address significant real-world issues.
  • Further our international reputation.
