Assistant Professor of Geology, position number 86373, UH Hilo, College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS), Department of Geology, tenure-track, full-time, general funds, permanent, nine-month appointment to begin January 2025, pending position clearance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching duties include a variety of introductory geology courses and labs, and upper-level specialty courses in the successful candidate’s areas of expertise. UH Hilo requires teaching the equivalent of three courses per semester, with the remainder of the workload devoted to scholarly activity and service. Advise students and contribute to student retention and recruitment efforts. Curriculum and program development in geology and natural sciences. Engage in research or equivalent scholarship. Perform service to the university, community, and/or profession.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Doctorate in geology or a related field from an accredited university at the time of appointment. Teaching experience in geology at the college level. Active research activities as evidenced by peer-reviewed publication within the last five years. High-quality communication skills as demonstrated by articulate cover letter and curriculum vitae that details how the candidate meets the minimum and desired qualifications.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Demonstrated record of high-quality undergraduate instruction. Evidence of the ability to teach courses in geology that will augment existing teaching capabilities as outlined in the section on duties and responsibilities. Experience working with a diverse student body or integrating perspectives of Indigenous peoples into science teaching. Experience in recruitment and retention of students. Experience or interest in being an advisor or mentor for undergraduate student research. Active research program that involves collaborative activities. Evidence of research that incorporates volcanic landscapes or a research program that will leverage the local geology.

Salary Information:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
