The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Pacific Ecological Systems Division (PESD) in Corvallis, Oregon, has a new postgraduate position available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). This project will explore research questions using extensive plant datasets collected as part of the National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA), the largest survey of wetland condition and characteristics in the conterminous US. The NWCA collects physical, chemical, and biological data from wetlands every five years. Vegetation data, including plant identification, species richness, and abundance, were collected at approximately 1,000 sites during surveys in 2011, 2016, and 2021. The NWCA vegetation dataset provides an opportunity to understand wetland plant communities and ecological integrity. Research questions may focus on developing plant indicators of condition and evaluating plant responses to stressors such as excess nutrients, climate change, anthropogenic disturbance, among others. The ORISE fellow will be involved in identifying research questions and designing data analyses. Preferred skills include wetland plant ecology, R statistical software, and experience with extensive datasets and GIS. Candidates should have a master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant field or be pursuing one. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. This position is only available to U.S. citizens. Position announcement and to apply: https://www.zintellect.com/Opportunity/Details/EPA-ORD-CPHEA-PESD-2024-02
