Climate Adaptation Fellow

The U.S. Geological Survey, Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center and National Park Service (Midwest Region and Climate Change Response Program) are working in partnership to enhance the resilience of infrastructure to climate change and advance climate adaptation on the landscape. This project will include:

• Reviewing and analyzing both the resources and the decision context
• Developing an assessment framework, gathering data, and conducting pilot studies
• Working with an advisory team, local managers, and partners to develop, refine, and implement the study
• Creating resources and tools for wider implementation

To advance this study, we are recruiting a Climate Adaptation Fellow (GS-12 equivalent) via ORISE for a 3-year position based in St. Paul, Minnesota. The selected participant will have the opportunity to assist with filling critical information gaps in climate effects on infrastructure, build expertise in decision science, hone skills in science communication, better understand the needs of the natural resource management community, engage with federal partners, and gain valuable experience being a part of a partnership-driven program within a federal science agency.

Qualifications: 

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (Engineering, Hydrology, Climatology, Water Resources, or related disciplines). Degree must have been received within the past three years or is currently pursuing.

Preferred Qualifications:

•  M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Hydrology, Climatology, Water Resources, or related disciplines.

•  Expertise in climate change

•  Experience or expertise in risk assessments

•  Experience or expertise in decision support systems

•  Experience working in and leading interdisciplinary teams

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 

September 9, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: 

The appointment will initially be for three years but may be extended upon recommendation of USGS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: 

The appointment will be full-time.

Participant Stipend: 

The participant will receive a monthly stipend based on education, experience, and full-/part-time status. The current (full-time) stipend for this opportunity is $78,969-$102,657 per year plus an additional travel and supplies allowance.
