The Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the general area of geophysics. We are particularly interested in candidates with research that provides direct synergy with our existing strengths in Earth surface and environmental processes, climate and cryospheric science, and Earth and planetary history. We will prioritize applicants who focus on understanding fundamental geophysical processes with a state-of-the-art laboratory, modeling, and/or field research program and who support the Department’s commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive college campus at all scales. In addition, we seek applicants that could strengthen ties to Dartmouth’s Departments of Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Thayer School of Engineering (among others), as well as encourage new interactions with the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society and the US Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL).

As qualified candidates will continue Dartmouth's strong traditions in graduate and undergraduate research and teaching, effective classroom teaching is essential for this position.  Teaching responsibilities consist of three courses spread over four, ten-week terms, and the teaching assignment for this position includes both an introductory Earth Science course and an upper-level course on geophysics.  To create an atmosphere supportive of research, Dartmouth offers faculty members grants for research-related expenses, a quarter of sabbatical leave for each three academic years in residence, and flexible scheduling of teaching responsibilities. The Department of Earth Sciences is home to 14 faculty members in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and enjoys excellent graduate (Ph.D. and M.S.) and undergraduate programs. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives. We are especially interested in applicants who have a demonstrated ability to contribute to Dartmouth's diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as the Women in Science Project, E.E. Just Program, and the Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.

Dartmouth is committed to academic excellence and encourages the open exchange of ideas within a culture of mutual respect. People with different backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives make the Dartmouth community diverse, which enhances academic excellence. Applicants should include a statement that addresses how their research, teaching, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitment to diversity in service of academic excellence.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geology, or a closely related field, or be ABD with degree received before the start of the appointment. Effective classroom teaching is essential for this position.
