Description The Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University invites applications for a full professor position as School Head to begin July 1, 2025. The Boone Pickens School of Geology is a key contributor to the university’s mission, offering robust programs that prepare students for successful careers in industry, government, and academia while supporting a varied and competitive research mission. The specialty for this position is open but should align with the School’s strengths in energy, environment, and sustainability.
The successful candidate will be an experienced, dynamic and visionary leader with a proven track record in academic administration, research, and teaching. The School Head is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the School’s mission, articulating a strategic vision for the School that aligns with the college and university’s mission as the preeminent, land-grant, R-1 institution. The Head manages the day-to-day operations of the School, including resource allocation, oversight of faculty development, support of the research enterprise of the School, and review of curriculum and program development with a focus on student success.
In addition to supporting the administrative staff and faculty, whose specialties span the geosciences and represent core strengths in disciplines relating to energy, environment, and sustainability, the new School Head will be expected to continue the history of strong relations with alumni, industry partners, and governmental agencies that currently engage with the School on a regular basis. We are seeking an individual who has demonstrated the ability to maintain a vigorous, innovative, externally funded research program, has contributed to undergraduate and graduate teaching excellence, and has experience supervising MS and PhD students. Candidates will be expected to support the learning needs of all students.
The School has state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with analytical instruments and computer hardware and software to facilitate teaching and research in the School’s areas of specialization. The School has a wealth of equipment for field and laboratory acquisition of geological and geophysical data. The School also hosts the Devon 3D Visualization Laboratory, the Gary F. Stewart Core Research Facility, and operates the Les Huston field camp near Cañon City, Colorado.
Qualifications The Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University invites applications for a full professor position as School Head with open specialty. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in the geosciences (Geology, EarthSciences, or a closely related field) with a distinguished record of research, teaching and service that qualifies for a tenured appointment at the rank of Full professor. The specialty for this position is open but should align with departmental strengths in energy, environment, and sustainability. Demonstrated experience in academic leadership with a strong record of accomplishment is preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders are essential. The ability to bring together stakeholders from across the School’s constituencies and foster transdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the School will be key to success.
