Job Summary:

This position housed in the Agroecosystems lab at Washington State University* provides research and stakeholder enagagement opportunity in evaluating effects of agricultural practices on carbon accrual and climate resilience. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating the effects of agricultural practices on carbon and climate mitigation potential in different regions of the Northwest (Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska) US.  They will also assess needs and develop new (or improve existing) decision-support tools for Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff related to implementation of climate-smart practices. The focus project for the position is funded by the USDA Northwest Climate Hub and NRCS, and the Postdoctoral Scholar will work in close collaboration with the Northwest Climate Hub in developing products and communicating results. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection between research and agricultural practice. The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct cutting-edge research and research synthesis to promote implementation of climate-smart agricultural practices in the Northwest Climate Hub region. We are looking for a candidate with strong research and communication skills and an interest in translating research to practice.

· Work with Northwest Climate Hub, Natural Resources Conservation Service staff. and other agencies and stakeholders to identify high-priority research, information, and tool needs related to climate-smart practices in the Northwest.

· For a set of agricultural practices, conduct syntheses and evaluate effectiveness in storing carbon and increasing climate change resilience in the Northwest.

· Develop summary reports and communications for NRCS staff and practitioners on mitigation potential, uncertainties, as well as any economic or environmental co-benefits (adaptation or otherwise), for the selected agricultural practices.

· Conduct independent research to evaluate the sensitivity of existing modeling tools for soil carbon to inputs, parameters, and assumptions.

· Work with the Northwest Climate Hub to collaborate and coordinate with scientists engaged in parallel efforts in nine other regional Climate Hubs across the country.

· Publish synthesis and independent research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

· Communicate and present results professionally to general and technical audiences at partner meetings and scientific conferences.
