The Department of Environmental Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, open-rank, tenure-line faculty appointment starting August 1, 2024.Applicants should have a PhD or anticipate PhD completion by August 2024 in relevant fields. Candidates can apply at the assistant, associate, or full professor level. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

 

We seek a dynamic, interdisciplinary scholar and teacher whose research focuses on environmental health and/or the global carbon cycle. We are particularly interested in scholars who work in areas related to soil science, food systems, agroecology, blue carbon, environmental toxicology, environmental epidemiology, or related fields. Our department is committed to the University's Inclusive Excellence plan, and candidates who can help us advance this plan through professional background, research, teaching, and/or service are preferred.

 

The most competitive candidates will have the following qualifications: a strong research and publication record in reputable, high-impact journals; demonstrated ability or potential for securing external funding; demonstrated ability or potential for teaching graduate and undergraduate students, including non-majors; motivation and ability to advance DEI in our department, the university, and the wider community; and collegiality and motivation to work with others in the department to create a supportive and productive academic environment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain externally funded research programs that engages students and generates high impact research. The faculty member will typically teach four courses per academic year. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in Department, College, and University activities and service, including DEI initiatives.

Established in 2008, the Environmental Science Department offers two undergraduate degrees (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), an undergraduate minor (BS and BA), and a master’s degree (MS). Our faculty will also have the opportunity to participate in the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Environmental and Biomedical Health Sciences, which is currently going through a university review process.
