The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level, with emphasis on multi/inter-disciplinary expertise in computational methods for civil and environmental engineering. We particularly encourage candidates whose research looks to the future and focuses on decarbonization of the built environment, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and infrastructure resilience. Specific research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, computational materials design and optimization, durability mechanics, coupled multi-physics of surface and subsurface systems, structural and topology optimization, construction automation, remote sensing, urban monitoring technologies and analytics, mobility equity, logistics systems, urban planning, building performance evaluation and design decision support via computational simulation, and human-building-community interactions. Applicants should hold an earned PhD or be near completion of their doctoral studies with demonstrated research potential in Civil Engineering or related fields.

Responsibilities. Successful applicants will be expected to develop a high-quality program of research and scholarship that is consistently productive, sustainable, and nationally recognized for excellence. This includes forming interdisciplinary research collaborations (with other faculty in the CEE Department, the University, and elsewhere), obtaining extramural funding to support a vibrant research program, producing peer-reviewed publications and other impactful dissemination activities, and recruiting and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates will also be expected to be an effective teacher at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to provide meaningful service to the University, citizens, and the profession.

Application instructions: Candidates are requested to upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research (2 pages), statement of teaching (2 pages), statement of diversity (addressing potential contributions to enhancing diversity, equity, and/or inclusion) (1 page), and the names and contact information for three to five references. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To receive full consideration, all materials should be received by December 1st, 2024.

Compensation: The expected base pay range for this position is $130,000–$140,000. This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation. Research discretionary funding will also be provided. Summer salary, including from sponsored projects, may also be available.

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
