Job Details
The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) within the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking applications for a Program Manager, Geologic Mapping position. NBMG serves as the state geological survey for Nevada and is a public service unit at UNR. The primary responsibility of the Program Manager, Geologic Mapping position is overseeing the production of geologic map publications at NBMG. This position allows NBMG to fulfill its core mission of producing geologic maps and digital databases necessary for statewide assessments of natural resources (e.g. minerals and geothermal), geologic hazards (e.g. earthquake faults, floods, and landslides), and the overall geologic framework.
The position will lead initiatives to acquire and use external grant funding to support the mapping program, primarily through the U.S. Geological Survey STATEMAP program, by preparing proposals for funding, serving as the Principal Investigator on grants, overseeing the fulfilment of cost share obligations, and managing the budgets of the mapping projects. The role will also oversee the publication of NBMG geologic mapping products, which includes identifying scientifically and societally relevant areas to map, organizing personnel to perform the geologic mapping, managing the geologic and cartographic production of the maps, overseeing internal and external peer-review, and facilitating final publication of the NBMG map products including digital datasets. The Program Manager will also serve as the NBMG liaison with the State Mapping Advisory Committee, which includes stakeholders from government, academia, and industry who provide feedback and direction to the NBMG geologic mapping program. The position will serve as “STATEMAP coordinator”, which functions as a liaison with the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program and includes attending meetings, conferences, workshops as well as regular correspondence with USGS personnel in regards to program priorities.
The Program Manager will provide oversight for a large portion of activities carried out by many of the faculty and staff within NBMG. Specific personnel management responsibilities include direct supervision of the Geologic Mapping Specialist position or positions, and the project-based management of Academic Faculty, Cartographic / Geographic Information Systems staff, and classified administrative staff involved with the mapping program and associated grants. This project-based management commonly includes supervision of as many as 10 NBMG personnel during a given annual grant cycle. The position will also manage contractors and LOA employees that contribute to the program (~5 additional individuals).
In addition, the ideal candidate will complete their own geologic mapping projects and fundamental research projects that relate to the evaluation of natural resources, geologic hazards, and the overall geologic framework in Nevada. These projects include new geologic mapping of bedrock and/or Quaternary deposits, interpretation of geologic data, and publication of results.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of related professional work experience OR Master’s Degree and three (3) years of related professional work experience
Related Experience:
- Geology or related geoscience field
- Research in structural geology, economic geology and/or Quaternary geology, with substantial experience in geologic mapping. Graduate research be verified by thesis projects or peer-reviewed publications

- Driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated publication of map products at 1:24,000 or similar scale.
- Experience with personnel management.
- Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects.
- Expertise in one or more of the following geologic disciplines: Quaternary geology, structural geology, sedimentology, economic geology, tectonics, and/or volcanology as demonstrated through graduate level research or publications.
