Oceanography of a Changing Planet

Position: Assistant/Early Associate Professor, Tenure-track.
Location: Ithaca, NY. The academic home for this position is the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, housed on the Ithaca campus of Cornell University.
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) seeks a highly collaborative scholar performing research in the area of Oceanography of a Changing Planet. The ideal candidate will make important contributions to the understanding of drivers and/or impacts of climate change through ocean physics, chemistry, and/or biology, and demonstrate an ability to work with existing faculty in EAS, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and across Cornell more broadly. We are seeking applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position at the assistant/early associate professor level.
Recognizing that interactions between ocean physics, ocean chemistry, and ocean biology are tightly coupled, we have framed this position description in the broadest possible terms. The successful candidate could specialize in a wide range of disciplines within Oceanography, including but not limited to: Dynamics (Physical Oceanography, Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Dynamics, Coupled Ocean-Ice Sheet Dynamics, Sea Level Rise), Chemistry (Ocean Acidification/Ocean CDR, Biological Carbon Pump, Coastal Eutrophication), and/or Ecosystems (Marine Heatwave Impacts, Ocean Acidification Impacts, Ocean Deoxygenation Impacts, Impact of Poleward Migrations on Marine Fisheries). We are also interested in candidates who will develop innovative predictive models and/or expansive observations derived using advanced technologies. We highly value research that recognizes a changing ocean’s impact on society and addresses the need for climate solutions. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching oceanography and climate change impacts at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Outstanding research scholarship is expected, as is excellence in and commitment to teaching, translation of knowledge, advising, and inclusive mentoring of students. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in service and leadership activities within the department, college, university, and relevant professional societies. Responsibilities:
This position has an effort split of 50% research and 50% teaching.
Research (50%) – The successful candidate will build and lead an internationally recognized research program focused on oceanography of a changing planet. The candidate will be expected to maintain a well-funded research program and provide opportunities for research mentorship.
Teaching (50%) – The selected candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in oceanography of a changing planet. Additionally, they will make valuable contributions to the department and college’s broader educational needs.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in oceanography, climate, atmospheric science, geoscience, or a related field is required. The ideal candidate will show promise of or have already developed a national and international reputation for their innovative scholarship.
