Job Details

The Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences in the College of the Coast & Environment at Louisiana State University (LSU), Baton Rouge, LA, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, nine-month position at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2025, to support a growing program in Coastal Meteorology. Candidates with a wide range of core research and teaching interests in observation and/or modeling of coastal atmospheric processes are encouraged to apply, especially candidates with primary expertise related to tropical cyclones or severe weather. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative, productive, and well-funded research program, collaborate with departmental colleagues, and provide high-quality instruction and mentorship to both undergraduate and graduate students.

About the Department:

The Department has nearly 30 active full-time faculty members, approximately 35 research specialists and postdoctoral scientists in residence, eight research-active emeriti and adjunct faculty, and numerous support staff. Our strengths include coastal ecology and restoration, wetland biogeochemistry, fisheries, numerical modeling, remote sensing, and the full spectrum of oceanographic disciplines – biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography. The department participates in a BS in Coastal Environmental Science and offers MS and PhD degrees in Oceanography & Coastal Sciences. The accessible facilities to our department include well-equipped research laboratories, substantial computing resources through the LSU Center for Computation and Technology, a machine shop with a fleet of small boats and vehicles of the Coastal Studies Institute of LSU, and larger oceanographic ships and coastal laboratory facilities through the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium. Louisiana’s Flagship University is a land-, sea-, and space-grant institution as well as a member institution of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Louisiana’s coastal zone is particularly vulnerable to atmospheric impacts, and the position aligns with LSU’s Scholarship First agenda, particularly in its focus on maintaining and strengthening of Louisiana’s leadership in research and practice on coastal preservation and restoration.

LSU is committed to diversity and is an equal opportunity/equal access employer; as such, candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. The greater Baton Rouge community offers a quality of life enhanced by numerous cultural, social, recreational, and culinary activities.
