Job Details

Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Geosciences to begin September 1, 2025. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or ABD in geomorphology or related field prior to the time of appointment. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal. We seek an individual who is passionate about teaching and working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting, an active and engaged scholar, and an effective mentor for students from diverse backgrounds.

Primary responsibilities include classroom and field-based teaching as well as mentoring undergraduate research projects. The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of topics including introductory geoscience, earth-surface processes, watershed hydrology, remote sensing and GIS. Candidates with experience in climate science and environmental science will also be given consideration. Teaching load is two non-lab courses (or one course with two lab sections) per trimester on a 10-week trimester calendar. Laboratory space and modest funds to support research are available.

Candidates should have the ability and desire to engage and mentor undergraduates in collaborative research and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching. The Geosciences Department has excellent facilities to support faculty research and teaching, including a total station, a sUAS with thermal and multispectral cameras, research grade GNSS, a sediment lab and two recirculating flumes for physical modeling.

Candidates should submit the following at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com/ : (1) a letter explaining their past experience and interest in this position at Lawrence, (2) a curriculum vitae, including names and contact information for three individuals who can be solicited for letters of recommendation at a later stage in the search process (two of whom can attest specifically to teaching), (3) a single PDF with separate statements on teaching, scholarship, and diversity. The diversity statement should describe the candidate’s experience related to addressing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in an academic setting and ways that they would contribute to these efforts at Lawrence. In their teaching statement, candidates must address their commitment to fostering a truly engaged and supportive experience for a diverse community of learners. Candidates are encouraged to read more about Lawrence at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com as well as www.lawrence.edu and Colleges That Change LivesApplications will be evaluated starting January 15, 2025.
