The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Assistant or Associate Professor in Geochronology / Director of the Nevada Isotope Geochronology Laboratory (NIGL), Department of Geoscience [R0144858].
ROLE of the POSITION
The Department of Geoscience at the University of Nevada Las Vegas invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in 40Ar/39Ar and/or (U-Th)/He geochronology and thermochronology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will serve as Director of the Nevada Isotope Geochronology Laboratory (NIGL). NIGL has a dedicated state-funded lab manager that runs day-to-day operations, an IsotopX NGX-600 multicollector mass spectrometer for 40Ar/39Ar data collection, and funding for an Applied Spectra RESOchron instrument for laser-ablation (U-Th)/He thermochronology. The IsotopX NGX-600 instrument has both furnace and CO2 laser sources, available funding to add an UV laser for 40Ar/39Ar insitu studies, and is housed in a 1,230 sq ft lab in a state-of-the-art LEED silver laboratory building. We are particularly interested in individuals who integrate argon and/or helium geo-thermochronogical investigations with innovative field, geochemical or other analytical techniques to pursue interdisciplinary research. Opportunities for collaboration exist with departmental research groups in solid earth, surficial processes and planetary geology. The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous, externally-funded research program; direct the NIGL at UNLV; teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels; and perform service duties at all levels.
PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT
The UNLV Geoscience Department has 20 faculty, 150 undergraduate students, and 40 MS/PhD students. In addition to NIGL, the department hosts multiple laboratory facilities, including: electron microprobe, field emission and tungsten filament SEMs, XRD, LA-ICPMS, collision-cell MC-ICPMS as well as stable isotope, fluid inclusion, and mineral separation labs. UNLV is a Carnegie R1 research institution, ranked among the nation’s most diverse campuses, and has graduate programs rated among the nation’s top 100, including Geoscience. The UNLV campus is within two hours’ drive of numerous breathtaking geological exposures and is an ideal location for geologic research and education. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Geoscience or a related field from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in the operation of laboratories for the collection of 40Ar/39Ar and/or (U-Th)/He geochronology and thermochronology data.
