Researcher/Scientist III to advance science (focused on remote sensing indices or plant performance/gas exchange) at the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) of Biosphere 2.
This position is defined to help us advance science, coordination, and support of LEO research at Biosphere 2, to understand how complex multifunction ecosystems emerge from bare rock hillslopes. We seek a person (with advanced degree or equivalent experience) to both engage directly with advancing our science (conducting research in the LEO system, ideally focusing on remote sensing of soil climate dynamics and plant performance) and providing leadership by working closely with the LEO director of science to assist us in our collaborative "convergent" scientific activities that further that advancement.
The mission of Biosphere 2 is to advance our understanding of the natural and human-made environment through unique research and experimentation, interdisciplinary science training and education, and leadership in initiatives that address the grand challenges to sustaining Earth systems and quality of life. Biosphere 2’s LEO is the largest suite of enclosed experimental hillslopes in the world, providing an ideal laboratory for testing and advancing remote sensing of ecosystem processes in a controlled environment at scale. Remote sensing science focuses on design, processing and scientific study of LEO with integrated suite of RGB phenocams, hyperspectral imaging (Surface Optics Corp, 400-1000nm for photosynthetic indices + RESONON 900-1700nm for surface plant/soil moisture dynamics), thermal imaging cameras, and scanning hemispherical Lidar.
Biosphere 2’s UA remote sensing Investigator team includes staff scientist Wei-Ren Ng and Professors Scott Saleska, Duke Pauli, Markus Tuller, and Bill Smith.
