Assistant or Associate Professor in Energy Transition

The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) at Penn State is expanding its strategic focus in the dynamic and evolving field of the global energy transition. EME invites applications for tenure-line faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to help shape the future of this field and contribute to our mission of leading the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable energy future. We seek exceptional candidates whose interests and expertise align with advanced energy storage technologies, critical mineral separation technologies, energy systems and decision-making, and areas essential to the global energy transition and a sustainable energy future.


EME is a dynamic, multidisciplinary department that thrives on collaboration and impact-driven research, fostering partnerships across academia, industry, and government. Penn State provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration through its renowned interdisciplinary institutes. This position may also include a co-funded appointment with Penn State's Institute of Energy and the Environment, offering access to world-class resources and networks.


Competitive applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor will possess a Ph.D. degree in a discipline related to their research area before beginning employment at Penn State, a strong potential for developing an externally funded experimental or computational research program that strengthens EME's core interdisciplinary research areas, and a demonstrated interest in and ability to educate and mentor students, advise graduate students, teach courses across our EME undergraduate and graduate programs, and contribute service to the Department, College, and University.


Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor should possess the same qualifications as Assistant Professor as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring, a strong research and publication track record, and an established reputation in scholarly or professional achievement. The successful candidate will assume a key role in advancing interdisciplinary research, serving as a collaborative leader who drives innovation and excellence.


To apply, submit a single PDF file containing a cover letter indicating the research areas of interest and the names and addresses of four references; a full curriculum vitae containing a complete list of publications; a research statement (limit of three pages); teaching statement (limit of one page); and two (2) published journal papers. The research statement should clearly align with the vision outlined above and explain how it strengthens EME interdisciplinary research areas. The teaching statement should identify the EME academic programs where the candidate could make the greatest impact, along with a preferred list of courses across those programs.
